I centre my pitches around 'niche' newsworthy topics. I tend to zoom in on local news that affects a specific demographic, ie; public commuters, Carleton University students or Ottawa residents. While I do not have a specific beat I do enjoy urban planning stories and could write forever about the ongoing transportation issues that face Ottawa. So far, I haven't written any hard news stories but I'm always open to a challenge. I like digging deeper and finding out how one event filters into a dozen mini issues. In my opinion, a lot of news states what has happened but not always what it means in the grand scheme of things.
I have just pitched my first in-depth story about the increase of women-only spaces in Ottawa.
Here is an example of a pitch! I often try to get an interview before hand to make sure I have a good foundation.
